Introduction

In this section you specify parameters which will define the location and level of detail of your appraisal.

Based on your inputs here, and throughout the application, health impacts will be estimated by comparing the situation "without intervention" with the situation "with intervention".

Throughout the tool, you will provide inputs for the situation "without intervention" on the left, and "with intervention" on the right.

By default, the tool shows "basic" options. You can choose to show "advanced" options in the panel to the right.

In the basic workflow you provide information on the "volume of active travel", in the format available to you (mode users, or trips). You can think of this volume as the product of users x trips x trip length. The tool will complement your inputs with missing information required to calculate this volume. You can review and change the additional parameters used in the "Assumptions" card. Health impacts are calculated as the difference between the situation with and without intervention. In the advanced workflow you can refine which subjects and trips are used for these calculations.

The tool suggests starting values based on the entire population in the selected area (LAD). These values are meant as rough guidance. Your intervention may affect considerably fewer people or trips; edit input fields directly, or use adjustment features where available.

In this section we estimate the total "volume of active travel" attributable to your intervention.

First you will specify over which time period your scheme will affect active travel. You can define by when the scheme will reach its full effect, and optionally, whether and how the effect will decline.

Then choose in which format you would like to provide the travel inputs (i.e. users, trips). Note that prepopulated values are based on the entire population in the selected geographic area and may not be indicative of the scope of your scheme. Edit these as needed.

The tool will complement your information with data and assumptions required to estimate active travel volumes, which you can review in the "Assumptions" card.

Both, the number of individuals that engage in active travel, as well as their characteristics, influence the magnitude of health impacts.

All values in this table are numbers of people (users), not trips. This also applies if you entered trips in the previous section. Initial values are estimates based on inputs you provided and, where needed, complementary assumptions. You can review and revise these assumptions in the Review of assumptions card. Adjust the numbers directly, or use one of the predefined refinement options below.
